The cleverly designed and highly praised garden, which has been developed over 18 years, has amazing views eastward to Ulting Church and the river Chelmer. There are herbaceous/shrub borders, a wildlife pond, raised vegetable beds and a fruit garden. The evening will conclude with inclusive tea/coffee and cake.

The ancient capital of Wessex, Winchester has an old world charm with plenty of interest and eating places. There have been gardens on the site of West Dean since 1661. Since the storm in 1987 Jim Buckland & Sarah Wain have carried out a bold redevelopment programme with four distinct areas: the gardens entrance; the walled kitchen garden; the pleasure grounds and St Roche’s Arboretum. Light lunch and afternoon teas are served in the restaurant.

The gardens were created by Vita Sackville West & Harold Nicholson from a ruined Elizabethan Mansion; they are a series of enclosed gardens each with different designs. Entrance includes a visit to the house and tower. Hot lunches and refreshment are available at the restaurant.
SUNDAY 12 AUGUST ABBEY GARDENS BURY ST EDMUNDS & HELMINGHAM HALL GARDENS

The Abbey gardens created within the walls of the former medieval monastery have a mixture of formal bedding. There will be time for Lunch and to explore this old town. We then visit the moated grade 1 listed Helmingham Hall Gardens, begun by John Tollemache in 1480. There are knot and walled gardens with magnificent summer borders. Refreshments are available at the Old Coach House.

Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild’s remarkable chateau built in 1874 includes a formidable art collection and is set in a grand park with fountains, vistas, terraces and walks. The gardens contain an extensive collection of Italian, Dutch and French statuary and an aviary housing a collection of exotic birds. The park contains plantings of yew, hornbeam, lime, cedar, cypress and much more. Several restaurants offer lunch and refreshments.
